The Rurals began with Andy Compton and Pete Morris, getting their name from Andy’s club promotions outfit and first record label, "Rural Promotions". In 1995 The Rurals had their first vinyl release, "Space Funk EP". After doing a few releases on the Idea label under different aliases - Green Belt and Rainbow Garden (with Matt Cundy and Dean Westcott) - The Rurals emerged as the name of the in-house production crew. Andy stopped Djing for a while, as Pete and he disappeared into "planet studio" for a time.

In the summer of 1998 a local record shop gave Andy’s number to Marie Tweek. She called him up, and The Rurals had a vocalist! Tweek brought with her a bass player, Pete "Gurner" Middleton, who has been appearing on Peng releases since the labels' birth. The next musician to team up with The Rurals was Charlie Hearnshaw, a saxophonist, who was in a band with Gurner. The newest member is Onlymatt - he is responsible for DJing, art direction, Web design and working on studio projects.

Also a member of the team as producer and mixer is Bazil is one of the south west’s most renowned DJs. When not working as a producer with The Rurals, Bazil is running a monthly in Bristol and DJing around the world.
